The subject of the biography is usually someone who played significant roles in a number of circumstances that had an impact on the society, or who has come up with innovative ideas or proposals that are recorded in a certain way. Barbara Heck left neither letters or statement. The sole evidence concerning the time of the marriage from secondary sources. No primary source exists that can be used to reconstruct Barbara Heck's motives, or her behavior throughout her life. In spite of this she became a legendary figure in the beginning of Methodism. The biographer has to define the mythology, define it and describe the person who is enshrined within.

Abel Stevens was a Methodist scholar and writer in 1866. The development of Methodism within the United States has now indisputably made the modest name of Barbara Heck first on the list of women who have a place in the history of the church of the New World. Her record is primarily due to the creation of her most important name, derived from the story of the major reason for which her name is forever identified more than from the history of her lives. Barbara Heck played a lucky contribution to the birth of Methodism as it was conceived in both the United States and Canada. Her name is well-known for the way that successful movements and institutions are prone to celebrating their origins.
