Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her how to utilize art as a method to express herself. Even though DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of an individual juror. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
